You will come across quite a few roundabouts driving in Melbourne and for that matter in most large cities in the world. Personally, I find roundabouts a great way of letting traffic flow steadily without too much of a hold up. Unlike traffic lights, one does not need to stop and wait for any traffic signals to move through.

When entering a roundabout be sure to decide which direction you need to go and have a good idea because some roundabouts can be complex an require one to move into a lane that is designed to meets the requirements of the area in question. Roundabouts are designed to address the local area traffic needs.

The most important rule after knowing where you’re heading is to give way to all vehicles already in the roundabout that are approaching from the right. It is like a T intersection and one really needs to give way to the right.

As always, take care to observe vehicles of all sizes, especially motor cycles that can move fairly quickly. When there’s a safe gap in the traffic and if you think you have more than enough time to make your way through then proceed to enter the roundabout. We should emphasize here that roundabouts are a hazard situation and your hazard perception skills need be always on high alert.

Use your signals to indicate the direction you will be going. The only exception is when you’re heading straight through without any minor turns on the roundabout. If you’re turning to the right or left then you need to indicate before you enter the roundabout and maintain the signal until you’ve turned into that direction.

Roundabouts are intersections that control traffic and allow that traffic to flow in all directions without too much waiting. In Australia all roundabouts are clockwise flowing. We stick to the round left of the island in the middle. The island in the middle of the roundabout is designed and is not part of the roadway for vehicles to travel over.

The video below is made for the UK drivers and is equally valid here in Australia too. There are much more tips in the video to help you with your driving skills at roundabouts.

In Australia we have road signs that help drivers have the best road experiences in the world. There will be roundabout signs way before you approach one. Those signs are designed to help motorist in their decision making. So, choose the lane that will be best suited for your traveling path.
