The Practical Driving Test Guide
The practical driving test is the final step towards getting your VicRoads driving licence.
If you’ve prepared well and had a fantastic driving instructor then you’re set to getting your driving licence with ease. Having a qualified driving instructor helps to get your licence easily. Take your driving lessons from driving instructors who can prepare you toward passing your driving test.
There are 3 stages or tests you need to pass in order to get your driver’s licence:
- Learner Knowledge Test
- Hazard Percipient Test
- Practical Driving Test
The practical test will take about one hour to accomplish.
Here are the Practical Driving Test steps you will be going through at the VicRoads testing office:
- Arrive 10 – 15 minutes prior to your driving test.
- they will ask you to wait for your name to be called out by the Learner Testing Officer (LTO).
- The Learner Testing Officer will fill out a form asking you for your details (name, date of birth, address).
- LTO will ask if you hold an Overseas Driver’s Licence and to get the details.
- LTO will also ask if you’re taking any medication that would be preventing you from taking the driving test.
- A simple vision test is conducted to ensure you have the minimum vision before sitting for the driving test.
- The next step is to go and sit in the car waiting for the Licence Test Officer to come out and inspect your driving test vehicle.
Licence Testing Officer will check the car controls before starting the test:
- Check headlights,
- Check car indicators,
- Check windscreen Washer Operation,
- Check horn,
- Check emergency hazard indicator lights,
- Check brake lights,
- and check rear demister.
The next step is the road driving test and it will take about 30 – 45 minutes in two stages.
stage one:
This stage will take about 10-15 minutes and it is the test to see if you have learned how to park and/or 3 point turn at a quite area.
stage two:
In this stage your driving skills are assessed. This will take about 20-25 minutes to complete. Just relax, listen and do exactly what the Licence Testing Officer wants you to do.
You will be assessed in the following driving skills:
- Lane changing and merging,
- Traffic Observations,
- Lateral position on the road,
- Gape selection,
- Vehicle position on the road during turns turns,
- Roundabout driving,
- Dealing with priorities at intersections like stop signs and give way signs,
- and also driving with traffic lights.
Please note that the driving test is not over until the Licence Testing Officer leaves the vehicle. If you’ve carefully learned to drive with your driving instructor then then there is no reason not to pass the driving test. If you pass your driving test your score is revealed and your photo is taken and sent to you by mail. You will receive it within 2 weeks. You ware given a temporary driving licence and are eligible to drive on your own. However, you must display the red P plates on your the vehicle you drive.

It’s cool to drive your own car that is if you’ve never driven on your own. Getting the driving licence is not the reward one would assume but rather to satisfy your legal obligations to drive that car. Having ones own car is what motivates most of us to go and learn to drive a car. The rewards of having your own driving licence and driving your own car are tremendously exhilarating.

It is true that a ones own family and friends become ecstatic when a learner driver passes their driving test. It is always a positive outcome when a test is passed. Any positive outcome benefits not only the learner driver who has done well but also those whom she/he comes in contact with. To do well in a driving test you’ll needs lots of practical driving lessons in all kinds of traffic conditions.
120 Hours of Driving Lessons
Here in Victoria you’ll need at-least 120 hours of supervised driving lessons and at-least 10 of those hours during night time to get you ready for your driving test. You’ll become a good driver as you practice driving daily on a regular basis. To develop your driving skills you need to give lots of attention to the environment you’re driving in. Your awareness needs to be developed and increased to a level where your hazard perception skills are strengthened to a degree where the hazard perception test just becomes a formality.
The importance of a Driving Instructor
It is also equally important that you take driving lessons from people who have abundant road knowledge together with clear teaching abilities to pass that knowledge onto you. A good teacher can only educate those students who are willing to learn, and vice-versa.
It is very also necessary that you go for your driving test with a driving instructor. At-least your last dozen or so driving lessons should be with a driving instructor to insure you benefit from the accumulated knowledge they possess not only about the driving lessons but also about the driving test itself.
Enroll with a driving instructor who has the test route knowledge and is willing to share with you the necessary skills required to educate and help you to pass the driving test.
When should you schedule your driving test?
This will be evident when you are confident in your driving abilities. You are driving and keeping up with the rest of the traffic. It is also necessary to be certain and honestly self analyze your own readiness. Your driving instructor will also have a response and give you the green light to go for your driving test. Leave the last decision to your driving instructor as to when to book your driving test. If they think you’re ready then expect that and book your driving test.
What to do during the driving test.
Treat it like any other driving lesson but with a atmosphere of confidence and calmness. We at Rahma Driving School expect our students who are going for the driving test to have a good rest the day before and have enough sleep the night prior to the test. You should not worry how you will do, Just be yourself and do not try to impress anyone with anything. Drive as expected like any other day.
Having a good breakfast.
Do not attempt your driving test without having a good breakfast. It’s all about keeping your body in control. Some people can get themselves all stressed out because of poor diet. Also, bring along a bottle of water just in case you need to hydrate.
Arrive Early Prior To Your Driving Test.
Arrive early and be at the testing office half hour before the drive test. You don’t want to rush at the last few minutes. This would be very bad and stressful for everyone concerned with the driving test.
Be Positive During The Driving Test.
Leave out all negative thoughts. It has been proven that negative thoughts can create make you fail the test. Be in an atmosphere of positivity and stay calm.
You’re nearly there getting your driver’s licence.
Turn off your phone and imagine passing your driving test. On this day wear comfortable clothing and shoes for driving which means avoiding high heals or thongs. If you’ve calm, ready and happy then you’re almost there.
